Heli-skiing in Canada for the first time : the complete guide to taking the plunge
Required level, actual budget, best time, choosing the lodge, safety… Everything you need to know before booking your first heliskiing trip in British Columbia.
Heliskiing in Canada. These three words make the eyes of off-piste skiers light up. Yet, many enthusiasts have never dared to take the plunge — convinced that it is reserved for professionals, that the budget is inaccessible, or simply that they don't know where to start.
What if your next winter was like this?
For over ten years, L'Or Blanc Travel has been organizing tailor-made heli-skiing trips in Canada—in British Columbia and the Yukon. Every winter, first-timers ask us the same questions: What skill level do I really need? How much does it cost? Which lodge should I choose? Is it dangerous? This guide answers all of these questions directly.
01 What exactly is heliskiing?
Heliskiing is skiing by helicopter: a helicopter drops you off at the summit of a mountain range inaccessible on foot or by ski lift. You ski down untouched slopes in powder snow that no one has yet touched, before being picked up by the helicopter to do it all again.
The concept originated in British Columbia in the early 1960s , invented by Austrian guide Hans Gmoser. Since then, Canada has remained the undisputed global leader in the discipline.
In a single day, you can accumulate between 4 and 10 drops, covering several thousand meters of vertical drop in snow you would never have reached otherwise. No groomed runs, no crowds, no snowcats — just you, the mountain, and the powder.
02 What skill level is required to go heli-skiing in Canada?
This is the first question everyone asks — and the good news is that the answer is not as restrictive as you might think.
The minimum requirement: proficiency in off-piste skiing.
You don't need to be a competitive skier. However, you must be comfortable off-piste : able to ski in powder, handle varied terrain, and be in good physical condition. Specifically, we're looking for skiers who can:
- Descending black and red off-piste runs without major difficulty
- Skiing in deep powder regularly
- To complete several consecutive descents without becoming exhausted
- Remaining independent within a group supervised by a guide
What you don't need to be
You don't need to be a high-mountain guide, professional freerider, or competitor. The majority of our participants are passionate skiers, aged 30 to 60, who regularly ski off-piste but have never had the opportunity to try heliskiing.
💡 Good to know: groups are formed by skill level, and our guides adapt the chosen terrain to each participant's abilities. A first heli-skiing trip isn't like a trip for experienced riders. You ski according to your own abilities, not those of others.
03 Why choose Canada?
Heli-skiing exists on several continents — Alaska, Türkiye, Iceland, Nepal… So why is Canada the leading destination?
The lightest snow in the world
British Columbia benefits from an exceptional microclimate: weather systems from the Pacific that bring massive and regular snowfall, with dry and light snow — the famous champagne powder.
Vast, untouched areas
Heliski operators have exclusive concessions of up to 10,000 km². Each drop-off takes you to terrain that no one else has skied all day.
An industry honed over 60 years
Canada invented heli-skiing. The result: a mature industry, extremely rigorous safety protocols, ACMG/IFMGA certified guides, and perfect lodges.
04 How much does a heli-skiing trip to Canada cost?

February – March: the high season (our recommendation) . This is the golden period: thick snowpack, longer days, statistically optimal powder conditions.

07 Which lodge should I choose for my first time?
Bell 2 Lodge – Last Frontier: The ideal introduction. A vast and varied field suitable for all levels.
Northern Escape: Reliability. Ideal if the weather is unpredictable.
